The Barry's Best Movers Process

The Barry's Best Movers Process: Residential Moving in Northern Virginia

Barry’s Best Movers handles the full residential move, packing, loading, unloading, and unpacking, for homes across Northern Virginia and the DC suburbs, from 600 to 8,000 square feet. Here’s exactly how it works, start to finish.

Step 1: Getting Your Estimate

Every move starts with an estimate. If you request one with plenty of notice, we can usually do an in-home estimate, or a photo or video walkthrough works as well. If your move requires a full pack and move, an in-home estimate is required so we can plan accurately.

Step 2: Packing

Choose full-service packing, where our crew wraps and boxes your entire home, partial packing for the parts that take longest, or pack everything yourself. A few things to know either way: all boxes you pack must be sealed with tape on the top and bottom, and all furniture, including dressers and chests, must be empty of jewelry, clothing, and other loose items before moving day.

For closets, we recommend large or extra-large boxes so hanging clothes can go in folded over the hanger. We provide 4.5 cubic foot boxes and can pack your closets for $5 a box. Books and paper need to go in standard small moving boxes (1.5 cubic feet); if we have to repack from a medium or large box you filled with books or paper, that’s $5 per small box we provide.

Step 3: Special Handling for Electronics and Lamps

TVs and other high-value electronics can be moved in your personal vehicle if you prefer. If our crew moves a TV without a proper moving box, we assume no liability for damage. If it’s in a proper box, we’ll do our best to protect it, though we don’t offer coverage for electronics.

Floor and pole lamps need the bulbs, shade, and harp removed before moving day. Pole lamps should be unscrewed at the joints and boxed separately. Concrete lamp bases are prone to breaking in transport if they aren’t packed properly, so we handle these with extra care.

Step 4: Loading and Transport

Furniture is padded and protected right where it sits, before it’s ever moved, so nothing gets scuffed on the way out the door. Boxes are loaded in an order that keeps everything secure for the drive, and your belongings go straight from your old home to your new one. Disassembly and reassembly of furniture is included.

Step 5: Unloading and Placement

We carry items into the rooms you want them in, not just through the front door, and do a final walkthrough with you before the crew leaves.

Step 6: Unpacking

Getting settled matters as much as the move itself. Our crew can unpack boxes, set up furniture, and clear away packing materials, so your new home feels lived-in faster.

Moving in Condos, Townhomes, and HOA Communities

A lot of our work is in communities with rules that catch people off guard, elevator reservations in Arlington high-rises, loading dock windows near Reston Town Center, or HOA notice requirements in Ashburn and Reston cluster associations. We handle that coordination as part of your move.

Where We Serve

We move families within about 50 miles of Sterling, including Arlington, Ashburn, Herndon, Leesburg, Reston, Purcellville, Silver Spring, and Rockville. We’re also frequently referred by local Realtors to make closing-day moves go smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in a full-service residential move?

A full-service move covers packing, loading, transport, unloading, and placement of furniture and boxes in the rooms you choose, plus disassembly and reassembly of furniture. Unpacking can be added as well.

Do I need to empty my dressers and furniture before the move?

Yes. All furniture, including dressers and chests, needs to be empty of jewelry, clothing, and other loose items before our crew arrives.

Will you move my TV or other electronics?

Yes, though we recommend moving high-value electronics yourself if possible. If we move a TV without a proper moving box, we can’t take liability for damage. In a proper box, we’ll do our best to protect it, though we don’t offer electronics coverage.

Do you handle disassembly and reassembly of furniture?

Yes, that’s included as part of the move, not billed as a separate service.

Can you pack my closets and books for me?

Yes. Closet packing is $5 a box using our 4.5 cubic foot boxes for hanging clothes. Books and paper go in small 1.5 cubic foot boxes, and repacking from your own larger boxes is $5 per small box.

Do you move apartments and condos, not just houses?

Yes. We regularly move apartments, condos, and townhomes across Northern Virginia, including buildings with elevators or specific loading dock requirements.

Do you handle HOA or building move-in requirements?

Yes. We coordinate elevator reservations, loading dock windows, and HOA notice requirements ahead of your move date so it doesn’t hold up moving day.
